Does anyone know of a good technical description of what is supposed to
happen when a USB key is plugged into a Linux machine?

I'm seeing anomalous behaviour, which would be much easier to debug with
an accurate description of what is supposed to happen. (At least one key
is clearly being recognised electrically, (the blinkenlight goes on), and
even some information showing up in dmesg output, but it's not getting
mounted.)

Behaviour on some keys is different between machines, and in some cases
directory structures appear to be present after keys are removed.
