But slashdot has just been its own flavour of fake news since the 
1990s.
With a very narrow, specific, and privileged bias too.

4chan (or even reddit) are more likely sources for 'real' news.

Any of the peer based sources will be highly populist, and short 
sighted with respect to timespan/history.
This is both the advantage an drawback of Wikipedia vs Britannica
(US popular emphasis vs control by a cabal of old white British men).

There is a dangerous game going on right now with the 'common carrier' 
type status
that social media has enjoyed.
Once censorship and editorial bias starts (and it always starts) it 
runs away fast.

But perhaps I digress.
My real source of real news is usenet.
