From jim at reptiles.org Thu Feb 16 16:15:42 2023 From: jim at reptiles.org (Jim Mercer) Date: Thu, 16 Feb 2023 16:15:42 -0500 Subject: [u-u] mentoring Message-ID: <97313194-6726-e7b5-4df5-3c87a6a126da@reptiles.org> hi, so, while i was in kenya, i met a young man who was interested in 'working with computers like you'. i spent 2.5 months there, on a working holiday, as is my wont. he seemed keen, so i decided to take a gamble and spend $150 on an old Dell laptop and installed Ubuntu desktop on it. i handed him a list of tutorials that looked good to me, and topped him up with 40GB of data on his phone. i advised that he needed to be cautious of videos, and not to burn it on netflix. (its been 2 weeks and he still has 20GB left, so, i'm guessing he heeded my advice) when i left, i gave him a pair of 24" monitors i had acquired for my stay, and the associated cables and dongles. he is working through the tutorials, and seems to be making some progress. he recently met another lad, who runs Kali linux, so, at least he has the start of some local community. he lives on a rural farm, so he has enough power (most days), but internet is via his phone, which is not terribly cheap. $35 (3,000 KES) buys a 40GB bundle, which expires in 30 days. for a guy with a daily income of $2-3, that certainly isn't cheap. i'd really like to help him, but, i fear i'm not the guy to do it. while i like the high of mentoring, and the attention and being able to spout off eloquently (in my opinion) about things, i lack the patience to teach, or to teach effectively. i'm entirely self taught (like zero formal education), which causes me to expect others to be able to do the same kinda self-learning. i wonder if anyone has more patience than me, or can direct me at some resources to help him out. let me know. --jim -- Jim Mercer Reptilian Research jim at reptiles.org +1 416 410-5633 Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!" -- Hunter S. Thompson
